Animals of the Ocean

Here's the "before and after" for my weekly design challenge entry to Spoonflower. This weeks theme is "Animals of the Ocean." This design is meant for young people to learn counting, color, and shapes. For the fish, I tried to use all basic shapes (except for some linear details) and only primary and secondary colors with a little white and grey.  Each fish type is grouped in a number from 1 to 12. There is also a subtle background of "sea plants." I think this may be my best entry yet. 😊

I made a few rough sketches. Here's one. (Please note: The "clown fish" was what is known by artists as a "happy accident.")

Weekly Design Challenge Before and After

My entry for the Animals By Land design challenge at Spoonflower:

For this design I used several old drawings of mine of whimsical creatures. Some are shown below. I also used two watercolor backgrounds - one for the whole piece and the second just under some of the animals and plants.

Fabric Design Challenge (Designs 1-10)

I've been doing a personal challenge since April 10th with the goal of creating 100 fabric designs in 100 days. I think it's helping, too - my design skills seem to be slowly but steadily improving.

Since I've been remiss in posting the designs here, I'm going to start posting them 10 at a time until I'm caught up. Please also visit my shop at Spoonflower. Here are designs 1 through 10:

A Sea Serpent in Saranac Lake

Spring has finally made its way to Saranac Lake, and yesterday, I went on an enjoyable photography walk through town. I may post a gallery at some point, but today I am featuring the newly installed Sea Serpent sculpture (say that 5 times fast!) located on Woodruff Street, less than a block off Broadway Street. The sculpture is truly amazing.

The artwork was designed and constructed by students of the North Country School with assistance from their teacher, Larry Robjent, as well as the property owner, Bill Domenico and his sons, Will and Leo. Adirondack Daily Enterprise articles about the sculpture can be found here and here.

Does this sculpture inspire you to make your own art? Have you seen it in person? Please feel free to answer in the comments. Also, if you know of other online photos or articles about it, please feel free to post the link. Thanks!

Easy Bookmarks for my Passion Planner

I am experimenting with different bookmarks for my Passion Planner. Here are 3 made with fabric collage and ribbons and/or bias tape. So far, I'm liking the top two the best in use, as the bottom ribbon (also pictured above) is a bit too thin on its own. Too bad - the peace sign theme is pretty cool.

If you have questions or would like a tutorial on how to make any of these, please let me know in the comments section.

Design Contest Before and After

This is my entry for this week's Spoonflower (Fabric) Design Challenge with a picture of the original drawing I used as my guide.

(By the way, my tentative plan at this point is to post my work on weekends and use the 5 weekdays to post tutorials/ideas/projects for others to try as well as inspiration for living a creative life.)
